UP Diliman ends ‘reading breaks’ for students, faculty

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman announced on Tuesday it will stop implementing its ‘reading break’ policy following the release of its calendar for academic year (A.Y.) 2024-2025.

The University Board of Regents approved the new schedule last Friday, June 21, marking the end of the pandemic-era setup it organized to provide a period of rest and recovery for students and faculty during the semester.

“The reading break was first introduced during the first fully-remote semester in 2020 ‘to support faculty and student wellness,’” according to Tinig ng Plaridel, the official student publication of the UP College of Mass Communication, as posted on its Facebook page.

“Meanwhile, classes for A.Y. 2024-2025 will start on Aug. 20. The registration period will be from Aug. 14 to 16, almost a week after the final examination period for the midyear term of the current school year,” it added.

UP Diliman will have its first regular semester from August 20 to December 09, 2024.

Other UP campuses outside Diliman will follow suit. – With Rolando Ng III
