President yesterday Marcos signed the “Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act”, citing the need to improve the country’s education system.
Under the new law, the annual teaching allowance for public school teachers will rise from P5,000 to P10,000 starting in the 2025-2026 school year.
“Since the start of my term, I have placed great emphasis on the need to bolster our educational system and the urgency with which this should be done,” President Marcos said in his speech during the ceremonial signing in Malacañang.
This approved law signifies the largest raise yet. Since 1988, public school teachers have been receiving allowances for their teaching expenses, starting at P100 and reaching P5,000 by 2021.
The President lauded teachers as the unsung heroes of society, acknowledging their dedication and sacrifice. He stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to support educators who serve the country by laying the foundations for responsible and productive citizens.
President Marcos also linked the signing to a broader effort to bolster the education system, a priority since the beginning of his term.
He referenced the administration’s MATATAG Agenda, which aims to address challenges in basic education by decongesting the curriculum, building more classrooms, providing learning materials and internet connections, pursuing a school-based feeding program, fostering safe learning environments, and implementing various support programs for learners.
The President thanked lawmakers for their efforts, emphasizing that the new law provides crucial support to teachers, enabling them to teach more effectively.
The Department of Education’s MATATAG Program is a comprehensive initiative to reform and enhance the Philippine basic education system, addressing key challenges and setting a path toward a more promising future for Filipino youth.
