The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through its field office in Bicol provided hot meals to more than 2,000 stranded passengers in various ports across the region on Saturday, May 25.
Regional Director Norman Laurio, through the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) mobilized the provincial, city, and municipal action teams for a quick and coordinated response to promptly and immediately release the prepositioned goods in the affected provinces.
Family food packs (FFPs) containing six kilograms of rice, 10 canned goods, five sachets of coffee, and five sachets of cereal drink were prepared to serve the stranded passengers in partnership with local government units (LGUs), which also provided meals and logistical support.
DSWD Bicol has prepositioned a total of 143,787 FFPs and 37,432 non-food relief items at regional warehouses across Bicol. These are made readily available for LGUs to distribute to affected residents.
Laurio of DSWD led his personnel in distributing lunch and dinner packs to some 760 stranded passengers in Matnog Port in Sorsogon. The Matnog LGU has also provided breakfast to the stranded passengers.
Thousands more passengers in Bicol Region are temporarily seeking shelters in other ports, schools, nearby inns and hotels due to typhoon “Aghon.”
