NAIA operations face one-month repair works on power systems

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) will conduct a month-long electrical maintenance operation in Terminals 1 and 2, the International Cargo Terminal, the Administrative Building, and the airfield of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The maintenance that will begin from Feb. 6 until March 7 is part of an on-going upgrade of electrical systems of the NAIA, with minimal disruptions in some areas.

However, NAIA management assured travellers that critical systems used for passenger processing will remain operational with no significant impact on flight operations due to the maintenance works.

Under the supervision of MIAA general manager Eric Ines, the agency  meets with stakeholders on the implementation of a unified strategy to ensure uninterrupted flights and passenger movement during the maintenance period.

The airport management completed the last round of electrical maintenance activities at Terminal 3 last December.

Since the start of the maintenance works being conducted by  Meralco, power cables have been upgraded to larger ones, voltage circuit breakers and relays have been replaced with new ones, and relay settings have been optimized.

This initiative is part of MIAA’s commitment to improving the overall reliability of the electrical systems of the country’s premier airport, officials said.

The MIAA pledges provide further updates and announcements on the maintenance activities.

The airport management faced criticism last year following a series of power outages during peak travel dates that caused frustration for air travellers.

Netizens have criticized the airport management for alleged lack of preparation and inability to prevent the interruptions.

A source said the airport management must take
responsibility for the recent outages and work towards finding a long-term solution to prevent any future occurrences.
