UN’s Khan meets with Bersamin in Malacañang

United Nations Special Rapporteur Irene Khan and Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin met inside Malacañang on Thursday, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security said.

According to the Presidential Task Force, Khan and Bersamin had an hour-long discussion regarding the state of freedom of opinion and expression in the country.

“Ms. Khan visited the Palace to meet with Executive Secretary Hon. Lucas P. Bersamin where they had a frank talk for one hour on the subject of press freedom and freedom of opinion in the country and the government’s effort to strengthen the rule of law and human rights under the Marcos administration.,” the task force said.

Khan also had a dialogue with different government agencies tackling various issues such as the killings of journalists in the country, the state of prisons, and judicial reforms.

UN’s Khan has been in the country since January 22 for a 10-day visit to assess the current state of rights to freedom of opinion and expression in the Philippines. She is scheduled to leave the country today, Feb. 2, after completing her assignment.
