Residents of Lower Bicutan in Taguig City left their homes following a chemical leak at an ice plant in the barangay on Monday.
Ten residents were rushed to the hospital after the ammonia leak at the ice plant along Manuel Quezon Street, which also resulted in the cancelation of classes at R.P. Cruz Sr. Elementary School.
“One of the workers said while he was draining the oil pack, the pipe where the ammonia came from suddenly came loose. That’s where the leakage started,” said Taguig City-Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) senior field officer Edson Regalado in an interview with CNN Philippines.
The Taguig Traffic Management Office closed Manuel L. Quezon Street to vehicular traffic and enforced a traffic rerouting scheme to prevent people from approaching the site.
Taguig Mayor Laarni Cayetano tapped the City Social Welfare and Development Office to assist in the relocation of residents to the designated evacuation site at Hagonoy Gymnasium.
