Semirara Mining and Power Corp.’s subsidiary Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corp. said Friday it expects to complete the repair of Unit 1 of a 300-megawatt coal plant in Batangas province by end of August 2023.
SMPC said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange SLPGC was extending the unplanned outage of Unit 1 that initially occurred at noon of June 17, 2023.
SLPGC owns the 300-MW coal plant (2 x 150 MW) in Calaca, Batangas.
“The plant outage was caused by turbine tripping, which resulted from high axial displacement—an excessive movement of the turbine along its spinning axis,” SMPC said.
It said the SLPGC plant management was investigating the cause of the excessive turbine movement, including a detailed inspection of the turbine component.
Repair work and return to service are targeted before the end of August.
SMPC said the insurance brokers and adjusters of SLPGC were informed of the matter and were working with the plant management to process the filing of the insurance claims.
“Coordination with power industry regulators and other key stakeholders are likewise underway,” SMPC said.
SMPC also owns Sem-Calaca Power Corp., which in turn owns and operates a 600-MW coal plant also in Calaca.
