Members of the Customs”•NAIA under the supervision of District Collector Carmelita Talusan discovered the shipment during an examination conducted at the Federal Express warehouse on Tuesday.

The seized drugs will be turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Meanwhile, the sustained implementation of the Philippine Anti-Drugs Strategy focusing on enforcement, justice, rehabilitation and reintegration, and advocacy have been credited with the largely improved response against the illegal drug problem, according to the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs.

In its year-end report for 2019 released on Dec. 13, ICAD announced that 15,894 villages nationwide had been declared drug-cleared, alongside the 27,918 anti-drug operations conducted within the year that resulted in the arrest of 41,947 drug suspects.

Out of the suspects arrested, 2,422 were considered high-value targets while 976 of the operations had been classified as high-impact.

The latest discovery of illegal drugs was the result of the efforts of the Bureau of Customs in coordination with PDEA and other members of the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.

Last month, the authorities used a controlled delivery scheme in their operation to arrest the consignee of P6.8 million worth of smuggled drugs from San Antonio, Texas.

The suspect, Edison Chua, was placed under arrest after receiving the package delivered by “FedEx personnel” at a sports bar on Kalayaan and Doña Carmen in Poblacion village, Makati City.

The shipment was concealed in water filters.

The authorities supervised the transport of the package from the FedEx warehouse all the way to Makati City, resulting in the arrest of Chua and his companion Brian Bantegui.

The controlled delivery technic is used when a consignment of illicit drugs is detected and allowed to go forward under the control and surveillance of law enforcement officers in order to secure evidence against the organizers of such illicit drug traffic.

This operation has been proved effective in some countries in identifying and bringing to justice principals, organizers, and financiers of the drug trade. With PNA
