San Miguel to use biodegradable packs

Food and beverage conglomerate San Miguel Corp. is set to use fully-certified biodegradable plastic packaging on several businesses as part of a sustainable business initiative.

San Miguel president and chief operating officer Ramon Ang said in a statement the company had teamed up with Philippine Bioresins Corp., which has been developing and testing the technology in the last five years, using biodegradable plastic packaging food and non-food products, such as cement and feed sacks, grocery bags and food packaging.

“Initially, we will use it for cement packaging. What we will use is a biodegradable plastic woven packaging, or sack. This is proudly developed by Filipino inventors, using local materials, and made by local workers,” Ang said.

Philippine Bioresins recently received an environmental technology verification certificate from the Department of Science and Technology Industrial Technology Development Institute.
