“We’re definitely more mature. But it was a gradual process. The network made a conscious effort in preparing us for the roles that transitioned us from teen stars to young adult actors that we are today,” Bea Binene told Manila Standard when asked about her reunion project with Derrick Monasterio and Kristoffer Martin.
The three stars were part of the coming-of-age romantic drama series Reel Love Presents Tween Hearts, which aired in September 2010. The series, according to Bea, made her closer to Derrick and Kristoffer even after it went off air in June 2012. In fact, she considers the latter one of her best pals.
After six years, the stars of three former teen stars reunite on the small screen for their special roles in the afternoon series, Dragon Lady.
The three artists are set to portray significant characters in the lives of Celestina Sanchez portrayed by Janine Gutierrez and Michael Chan played by Tom Rodriguez.
“We’re playing support yet equally important roles. We’re going to open the series for a week or two, sort of to introduce the story and give the audience a better picture of where the main characters are coming from,” Derrick shared.
In the series, Bea plays Almira. She works as a cashier in a chain of supermarkets owned by a rich Chinese businessman (Leo Martinez in a special role). When he tries to rape her, she hits him with an ancient dragon statue to defend herself.
She runs away with the dragon statue which has her fingerprints on it. The dragon statue proves to be a lucky charm as good things started to happen in her life. However, every piece of good luck comes with a price to pay. Her only daughter, Celestina, is cursed with dragon-like features. Despite this, Almira loves her daughter unconditionally and protects her at all costs.
Meanwhile, Derrick plays the role of young Charles, the son of a wealthy Chinese family and Celestina’s biological father. His obedience to his parents and lack of willpower to fight for Almira, caused their break-up.
Kristoffer then breathes life to the role of young Bryan. He is Almira’s loyal friend who loves her unconditionally. Later on, they marry and he becomes Celestina’s father figure.
As the years go by, Almira and Bryan will be played by Diana Zubiri and James Blanco, respectively.
“I’m happy for this reunion. We are already comfortable with each other. And that makes taping for the series so much easier,” Kristoffer chimed.
Dragon Lady premieres tomorrow, March 4 on GMA Network.
