Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones describes the opening of classes on Monday as orderly, smooth and “boringly normal.”

She also reports, some 13 million public school students enrolled this year.

Briones joined Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella during the press conference in Malacañang on Tuesday.

DepEd found no major problems on the first day of school.

It, however, observed a surge in late enrollment of students in some schools in Northern Mindanao.

The enrollees are from Marawi City who were displaced by the fighting between government forces and Maute group.

Briones reminds schools to refrain from subjecting transferees from Marawi City to documentary requirements as they undestandably may not be able to produce these papers.

The secretary has monitored that only 1,391 Marawi students have enrolled in schools outside the city so far.

The total number of Marawi students is estimated at 22,000.

Briones said, some Marawi students have enrolled in a school in Tarlac where their families had fled.
