President Rodrigo Duterte has signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change on Wednesday morning.

The document, called the “Instrument of Accession,” will be forwarded to the Senate for its ratification on Wednesday afternoon.

Senator Loren Legarda is set to sponsor the resolution seeking the chamber’s concurrence.

The accord is a legally-binding global agreement that aims to cut greenhouse gases and keep global temperature increases below two degrees Celsius.

With this paper, the Philippine government commits to reduce carbon emission by 70% by 2030.

So far, 194 member-countries of the United Nations have signed the agreement.
