ERC defers two supply agreements

The Energy Regulatory Commission said Wednesday it put on hold the processing of the power supply agreement applications of Manila Electric Co., Mariveles Power Generation Corp. and Global Luzon Energy Development Corp. for lack of an environmental compliance certificate.

Meralco filed the two applications for power supply agreements prior to the deadline set by the ERC to conduct a competitive selection process or bidding for their power supply requirements.

Meralco and Mariveles Power controlled by San Miguel Corp. asked the ERC to approve the supply agreement.  The power distribution firm agreed to source 528 megawatts from Mariveles Power’s planned 600-megawatt circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power generating facility in Mariveles, Bataan, which is scheduled to become operational by 2020.

Meralco’s power generation arm Meralco PowerGen Corp. owns a 49-percent stake in Mariveles Power.

Meralco and Global Luzon Energy also filed a separate power supply agreement for the supply of 600 MW from the power firm’s planned 670-MW coal-fired power plant in Luna, La Union, which is expected to be finished by 2022.
