Black likes Meralco’s hot 2-0 Gov Cup start

IT was one favorable weekend for Meralco.

Carrying the momentum they got from a solid run in the Commissioner’s Cup, the Bolts are making their presence felt right away and are enjoying a rousing start in the 2016 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup.

After two straight wins in the opening weekend of the season-ending tournament, Meralco quickly grasped the top spot with its 2-0 start after dispatching two quality opponents to start its campaign.

In the tournament’s first game last Friday, Meralco disposed Phoenix, 108-103, while it continued its winning ways with an equally impressive 100-96 victory over Alaska last Sunday night to sweep its two outings in three days.

Meralco coach Norman Black is very impressed so far with the performance of his team in their first two victories.

“It’s actually a very good start for us. It’s a good thing we’re able to survive this weekend. I was worried about these back-to-back games for us,” said Black. “We’re very happy to get these wins and move on.”

Black and his Bolts, however, are still focused on gradually enhancing their performances as the tournament moves along.

“We still have a lot of things to improve on as a team,” said Black.

One huge reason why Meralco is off to a blazing start is the monster play of import Allen Durham.

Durham is averaging 34 points per game so far for the Bolts and his explosive game is boosting Meralco’s overall performance.

Left impressed by his reinforcement, Black couldn’t help but compare him to one of the league’s greatest imports of all time.

“Durham is a thoroughbred. He reminds me of Bobby Ray Parks. He is a solid player and he has great attitude,” said Black.

The same can’t be said for Phoenix, who also had two games in the conference’s first three playdates during the weekend but lost both to start the conference 0-2.

The Fuel Masters played twice as well, but lost on both occasions to the Bolts and to defending champion San Miguel, 124-113, last Sunday.
