Interior design students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) renovated a section of the Philippine Naval Reserve Center in Manila, transforming the living quarters into a functional and comfortable space aimed at supporting the well-being of service members.
The student-led project, named Daong, converted a 22-square-meter barracks into a modern shelter that incorporates elements of the Philippine Navy’s history and heritage. A 15-square-meter hand-painted mural and a blue camouflage accent wall, symbolizing resilience, highlight the renovation.
Modular furniture, including bunk beds for six to eight personnel, personal storage cabinets, and a pantry area were installed. Students emphasized space efficiency and lighting to define designated zones within the quarters.
“It is designed as a sanctuary where they can rest and recharge—physically, mentally, and spiritually—so they can continue serving with courage and honor,” the group said.
The project was supervised by mentor Randy Pabona and involved students Janice Wong, Marifel Famorcan, Jeffrey Martin Tan, Sharmaine Clarisse Chen, Sophia Angelica Castro, Erika Julia Ponce, and Faye Margarette Alcala.
To raise funds for the renovation, the students produced and sold merchandise reflecting their advocacy and organized a campus bazaar with over 20 local vendors. They later staged a culminating exhibition at Ayala Malls Manila Bay to showcase the project.
The Philippine Navy, established in 1898, is tasked with protecting the country’s maritime interests, including the West Philippine Sea and Benham Rise.
