Promoting automotive cybersecurity awareness

Leading cybersecurity firm Trend Micro is ramping up efforts to address automotive cybersecurity concerns, particularly in light of rising threats such as car hacking. At DECODE 2024: Fusion Forward, Trend Micro introduced a dedicated session titled “Automotive Cybersecurity: Defending Against Car Hacking,” showcasing its commitment to equipping local cybersecurity professionals with essential knowledge.

With the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and advanced infotainment systems in the Philippines, the need for robust cybersecurity measures has become increasingly critical. Alma Saturnino-Alvarez, Threat Hunting Director at Trend Micro, stated, “This is our first demonstration at DECODE focused on automotive cybersecurity. As technologies evolve, so do the tactics of threat actors. This session aims to raise awareness of the potential risks associated with modern vehicle systems.”

The session, led by Jonathan Jay Turla, a principal researcher at VicOne—Trend Micro’s automotive cybersecurity subsidiary—featured live demonstrations aimed at educating attendees about vulnerabilities in radio frequency (RF) and infotainment systems. Participants learned how RF attacks, such as jamming and replay attacks, could compromise keyless entry systems, leading to car theft. Additionally, the demonstration illustrated how a flash drive could be used to execute malicious code on an infotainment system, potentially allowing hackers access to sensitive data.

The event underscored the urgent need for public awareness about the implications of car hacking, including GPS data theft and identity fraud. By highlighting these vulnerabilities, Trend Micro aims to prepare the community for the future of electrified transportation and bolster the security of the automotive ecosystem.
