Technology is  paving the way forward for a prosperous Philippines, but will need an army of innovators, an unbreakable spirit of collaboration, and transformational leadership to help achieve that digital revolution’s promise of a brighter future for this generation and generations to come, as highlighted by   PLDT and Smart First Vice President and Head of Enterprise and International Business Groups, Mitch Locsin.

Locsin stressed the irreplaceable value of human creativity and a shared vision in harnessing the opportunities offered by cutting-edge technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and the potential of incorporating more clean energy in business operations.

He also reminded everyone that technology offers vast opportunities in the face of a fast-changing world, where adaptation is no longer an option for businesses to survive but a necessity.

“We understand that technology is not just a tool, it is a catalyst for growth, an enabler for dreams, a bridge that connects today’s visions into realities. Our commitment is rooted in this shared vision—where businesses, whether giant entities or local champions, could flourish,” said Locsin, during the recent Philippine Digital Convention 2023, or PH Digicon 2023, VISION: Reimagine Tomorrow’s Enterprise

“Together, we are not merely navigating this digital revolution, we are shaping it. Together, we are not just surviving, we are thriving. Together, we are not just witnessing change, we are driving it, propelling businesses into a new era of possibilities,” Locsin added, while also introducing his virtual assistant RHODA.

In a demonstration of how AI could collaborate with humans even in the realm of creative, RHODA quickly wrote the lyrics for a song for an audience suggested theme–“Love in the Time of AI” –that Filipino rock star Rico Blanco performed in various genres, including rock, rhythm & blues, and reggae, to the delight of the audience.

Even before RHODA, the PLDT Group already put to work PEARL as a virtual concierge at the recently concluded FIBA World Cup in Manila.

“In this era of awe-inspiring technologies, the Philippines stands resolute in ambition to become the hyperscaler hub of Asia Pacific. It is our tribute to our unity and our unyielding spirit as a nation,” said Locsin. “But beyond this audacious goal lies something even more significant. At the very core of this digital transformation is the spirit of partnership. The essence of collaboration is what is defining our journey,” he added.

Highlighting the boundless potential of collaboration and entrepreneurial zeal, the daring of start-ups, and the guiding influence of education in driving the Philippine digital transformation journey, Locsin pointed out that there must be continued partnership in exploring the interplay between humanity and technology. This will then help in creating avenues where collaboration sparks innovation, where mentorship nurtures the next generation, and where education catalyzes not just the learning but a revolution of ideas.

“Together, this synergy of small businesses, start-ups and education creates an ecosystem of resilience, transformation, and perpetual renewable,” he said.

The event also explored transformational leadership and the need for sustainability in this digital revolution to foster progress that aligns with environmental and societal values.

It featured Digicon City that encompasses the SME Zone, which provided networking opportunities for entrepreneurs; Digi Hub,  a section that offered insightful programs from various entities as well as from experts, entrepreneurs, and influential speakers; and Digi Grounds, which allowed attendees to have a hands-on experience in innovative and new technologies, interact with cutting-edge demos, and connect with fellow delegates.

PLDT and Smart also celebrated the thriving start-up communities in the country as it hosted the Start-Up Innovation Challenge, where start-ups present their demos involving technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G, Smart Cities, Immersive Technologies, and Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) to help address everyday challenges.

“The path ahead is challenging. But with the strength of our collective determination, we will pioneer a future that harmonizes innovation and compassion and unity. Onward towards a digitally-powered, more inclusive and brighter future where technology not only propels us forward but uplifts our collective spirit. Remember this, technology is nothing without a person with a vision,” Locsin concluded.

MUSIC & LYRICS: Mitch Locsin, PLDT and Smart First Vice President and Head of Enterprise and International Business Groups, introduces Rico Blanco to his virtual assistant RHODA, who was tasked to quickly write the lyrics of an audience-suggested song—Love in the time of AI. Just as quickly, Rico put music to the lyrics and sang the song in various genres, including R&B and reggae. Locsin says the impromptu performance demonstrates the possibilities offered by AI even in the realm of creative.
