In a vibrant celebration of Filipino creativity and artistic heritage, the 2023 National Arts and Crafts Fair (NACF) brought together a diverse array of artisans all across the Philippines.
Among the distinguished guests was the Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines, Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, who expressed his admiration for the diverse cultural display at the event.
The NACF, held at Megatrade Halls 1-3 in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City from October 4-8, provided a platform for indigenous crafts, arts, and traditions to shine. Ambassador Castelino remarked, “The National Arts and Crafts Fair exemplifies the deep-rooted artistic traditions of the Philippines and the entrepreneurial spirit of its people. It’s a true celebration of culture and creativity.”
Senator Loren Legarda, the driving force behind the NACF, conceptualized the event in 2016 to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage and promote the economic viability of indigenous arts and crafts.
This edition, marking the NACF’s return after a three-year hiatus, featured carefully curated displays from over 200 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across all 17 regions of the Philippines.
Ambassador Castelino commended the craftsmanship on display, stating, “As I went around and visited the various stalls, I was totally immersed in how rich the culture and tradition are, especially the creativity of the Filipino people.”
He expressed Malaysia’s interest in collaborating with the Philippines, particularly in the development of MSMEs, emphasizing potential growth in sectors like the halal industry.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Castelino envisioned future collaborative events akin to the NACF, not only involving the Philippines and Malaysia but also other ASEAN countries. Such endeavors would foster a sense of community and shared cultural appreciation.
The NACF stood as a convergence of art, culture, and entrepreneurship, embodying the spirit of creativity that unites nations. As the event successfully concluded, the echoes of appreciation for Filipino artistry and ingenuity continued to resonate, promising more collaborative cultural celebrations in the future.
“I would like to invite the entire Malaysian community to the National Arts and Crafts Fair to enjoy and partake in this wonderful experience,” the Malaysian Ambassador said.
As he explored the fair, Ambassador Castelino stumbled upon a food stall offering freshly cooked piaya, a sweet flatbread pastry. It was a delightful encounter, showcasing the diverse and delectable offerings at the event.
Expressing his love for Filipino desserts, he specifically mentioned his favorites, saying, “My favorite dessert here is ‘turon,’ and a close second is ‘bibingka.’ I love bibingka; it’s something I really enjoy.”
However, Ambassador Castelino humorously added, “Having so much of it in the Philippines, I’m afraid I’ll put on weight, which I actually have!”
