Top seed NM Emperado rules Metropolitan chessfest

Top seed National Master Emmanuel Emperado lived up to expectations as he ruled the Metropolitan Chess Club Grand Reunion Standard Open Chess Tournament recently at the Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong City.  

Shown here standing at the center is champion NM Emmanuel Emperado, while on his left is NM Efren Bagamasbad (runner-up). At his right is USCF Master Jose Aquino Jr. (third placer), along with  the tournament officials, MCC organizer Mila Emperado and the other winners. 

Emperado, who boasts of the highest NCFP rating of 2207 in the tournament, finished with six wins and one draw (6.5) against fellow NM Efren Bagamasbad in this seven-round Swiss event, sanctioned by the NCFP and organized by MCC in cooperation with MILO.  

Emperado brought home the championship trophy plus the gold medal and the P4,000 top prize.

The draw led Bagamasbad for a tie from second to third places along with USCF Master Jose Aquino Jr. with 5.5 points each. However, due to a better tie break, Bagamasbad grabbed runner-up honors and received P2,500 plus a silver medal. Aquino took third place and received P1,500 plus bronze medal.

Rounding out the Top 10 winners were John Kenneth Gelua (4th); Leonito Raul Villate (5th); Clark Kaeron Kwan (6th); Lorenzo Cochanco (7th); Arnel Ellis (8th); Joel Ambas (9th); Alwin Sopungco (10th). Finishers from 11th-20th who were awarded bronze medal each were: Venz Dwight Kwan (11th); Jose Layones II (12th); Bejie Paulo Aclao (13th); Christopher Jed Dayo (14th); Leo Aldrin Caraig (15th); Andrew Sopungco (16th); Ivan Gelua (17th); Roville Viatrice Ceron (18th); Alexander Gelua (19th); and Kezia Ligutan (20).

Category top performers were Alwin Sopungco (Top 55-46); Mady Anonuevo (Top 45-36); Burlington Tiu (Top 35-20); David Joshua Orense (Top 19-15); Karlycris Clarito Jr. (Top 14-11) and Julie Gelua Jr. (Top 10-under). The top Milo Checkmate Performers (High School and Elementary) were John Andrei Abrantes and Nathan Maligaya, respectively. 

The youngest participant was six-year-old Jayden Aquino.

The next MCC event is set on Feb. 1 and 2, a Standard Youth Open Tournament for those who were born on the year 2001 onwards.
