Humility, trust fuel Petro Gazz Angels’ historic AFC win

Japanese coach Koji Tsuzurabara consistently referred to his Petro Gazz Angels as the “challengers” and downplayed their chances against the 10-time Premier Volleyball League champions, the Creamline Cool Smashers. Even though he may only be the one who understandably knows what his instructions during games were, his message though was clear —they were there to win.

He maintained a calm and quiet demeanor throughout the tournament, letting his team’s performance speak for itself. He placed immense trust in his players, especially team captain Remy Palma, empowering her to lead during crucial moments. Tsuzurabara also made a point of highlighting the contributions of every player, not just the stars, ensuring everyone felt valued. This humble and team-focused approach proved successful, as the Angels achieved a historic victory, dethroning the long-reigning Creamline in the PVL All-Filipino Conference.

Even in the moment of triumph, Tsuzurabara remained reserved, quietly observing his team’s celebration. The emotional embrace he shared with Palma afterwards symbolized the strong bond and effective partnership that led to their unexpected championship win.

At the post-championship press conference, the typically reserved mentor let his guard down. For a man who rarely spoke, the tear he shed said more than any speech ever could.

And when asked how it felt to finally triumph after embracing the underdog role all-conference long, his answer was simple:

“Too much happy. I can’t believe,” he said.

But his team believed. The faithful believed.

And with their grit, resolve, chemistry—and silent strength, the Angels proved they’re no longer just “challengers.” They are champions—with or without the grand speeches, with or without the playbook spelled out.

Because coach Tsuzurabara didn’t need to speak loudly.

He led loudly.
