Car crash injures Fil-Aussie chesser

Fil-Australian chess player Arianne Caoili, the wife of world no. 4 Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian, is reportedly in serious condition after a single-vehicle collision in Yerevan.

Reports said rescue services in Yereven responded to a car crash call Saturday midnight.

The 33-year-old Caoili, who played for the Philippine women’s team in the World Chess Olympiad twice in 1998 and 2000, was driving her SUV on Sebastia St. in Yerevan when she appeared to have lost control and crashed into a concrete barrier under a bridge.

Rescuers came and evacuated Caoili to the Astghik Medical Center.

Doctors reportedly said her condition initially was serious, but according to updates, she has regained consciousness.

Caoili, a women’s international master, transferred her affiliation to the Australian Chess Federation in 2004.

And she has since represented Australia in the Olympiad in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Arianne, who has a FIDE rating of 2139, and Levon, have been married since 2017.
