Camp John Hay 1 retakes Fil Am golf lead

BAGUIO—Camp John Hay Golf Team 1 got another big game from local star Paolo Wong to retake the lead and move closer to the Fil-A division title after three rounds in the 74th Januarius Fil Am Invitational at the Baguio Country Club.

Wong, regarded as one of the most successful amateurs to come from the City of Pines, paced his team with 33 points—an impressive score against a tough BCC par-61 layout. Melchor Rabanes and Emilio Curran chipped in 26 apiece and captain Leo Corpuz added 23 for CJHGC’s 108 and 363.

“It’s a slight lead, but we’ll take it. It is nice to be up heading to the final day,” CJHGC team captain Corpuz said.

Forest Hills Team 1, which took control of the second round at Camp John Hay, slid to second as it produced only 95 points for a 54-hole total of 361. Don Breganza carded 27, Joshua Buenaventura supported with a 24, while Pierre Ticzon and Adrian Romero each made a 22.

“We need a good round tomorrow (today). I am hoping to get more points from our gunners,” said Forest Hills captain Raymond Bunquin.

The youthful squad of Eastridge Primehomes (345) assembled an 88 on the 27 of Vito Sarines, 21 each from Jared Saban and 19 of Armand Copok.

In Am-A played at CJH, Forest Hills Team 2 (121-317) was slightly ahead of Time Cargo Logistics 2 (118-315), followed by Team Master (108-299) and Srixon IMG (105-280).

Pearl Kai got 24 from Charles Ahuna, 22 from Emem Cabudol, 20 from Joven Cambaud and 18 from Alex Ramos for a collective 84 points and 311 to erect a huge 17-point lead in Fil-B.

Moto Team 1 and Modern Titos La Cabrera hold joint second with 294.

CJHGC’s Team 2 holds sway in Am B with a 284 after 116 at its home course.

Meanwhile, competition in the championship divisions resumes today with Eastridge Primehomes and Batangas Barakos in pole position in Fil and Am divisions, respectively.

“Players are motivated and ready to go,” Eastridge skipper Gimo Asuncion said.
