LIPA CITY, Batangas— An unprecedented mixed-team golf competition gets off the ground as Lipa City proudly introduces the inaugural Lipa City Fiesta Barako Golf tournament, slated from Jan. 15 to 18 at the Summit Point Golf and Country Club and Mount Malarayat Golf and Country Club.

The announcement was made during a media conference at Summit Point by Lipa City Mayor Eric Africa, key LGU officials and representatives from the co-host venues.

Conceptualized by Engr. Raul Montealto, who presented the idea to the LGU, the Barako Golf aims to amplify Lipa City’s sports programs while showcasing the city as a harmonious blend of traditional charm and contemporary development, offering a serene getaway.

Mayor Africa expressed his agreement, stating, “It is truly an honor for our city to start this kind of tournament, which we see as on par with other major team championships in the country.”

Africa continued, expressed hope that through Barako Golf, the city’s two golf courses—Mount Malarayat and Summit Point—along with Lipa’s scenic beauty and delectable cuisine would garner recognition, locally and internationally.

He aspires for Barako Golf to become a staple in golfers’ annual calendars and transform Lipa into a sought-after travel destination.

Montealto, the tournament’s brainchild, highlighted the collaboration between Mount Malarayat, celebrating its 25th year, and Summit Point, approximately 20 years old, as the driving force behind making Barako Golf a reality.

Modeled after some of the best team competitions, the event contributes to Lipa’s golf tourism efforts.

Barako Golf offers participants two practice rounds on Tuesday, a welcome cocktail, fiesta-themed party nights on tournament days (Jan.17 and 18), and a grand awarding party during the last day, featuring exciting entertainment and raffle prizes.

A brand-new Toyota Wigo and a golf cart will be raffled off during the awards night, adding an extra layer of excitement.

But what would set apart the Barako Golf, sponsored by CWS Party List and RAMADA Realty, is that it will accommodate female players, something that is not allowed in the other team competitions in the country like the Fil-Am Invitational and PAL Interclub.

“Female players are welcome to join,” said Summit Point general manager Vic de Guzman. “Of course, we will take in consideration their handicaps and adjust them to level the playing field.”

“There is a clamor from the ladies as to why they are not allowed team entry play so we decided to go against the tide and include them. We are proud to have this kind of setup. The Barako Golf is not only for Barako golfers but lady golfers as well,” added De Guzman.
