SIBOL made history on Sunday as the first esports team to win a gold medal at the 30th Southeast Asian Games in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang discipline in the San Juan Arena, San Juan City.

Members of Sibol team celebrate their victory

The team overcame their final assignment—Indonesia—with a come-from-behind win to secure the gold for the country.

The Filipino squad secured their playoff spot after getting a draw against Thailand despite a tough group. The group included the team that is considered the strongest team in the tournament, Indonesia.

Sibol took the second seed and started the Playoffs in the lower bracket, while Indonesia topped the group and earned a spot in the upper brackets.

Sibol began its playoff journey against Vietnam in the lower bracket semifinals. Despite the the tight matches, Sibol took it home in two games.

The Filipinos once again showed their strength as they swept Malaysia to contest for the gold medal.

Both teams showed why they deserved the gold medal in an exciting series but in the end, Sibol stood tall and on top of the podium, scoring a 3-2 victory over Indonesia.
