NBA G-League’s Byrd to coach Green Archers

The La Salle Green Archers are set to have new head coach by January.

Jermaine Byrd, who was an assistant coach for NBA G-League teams Tulsa 66ers, Sioux Falls Skyforce and the LA D-Fenders, is set to come aboard in the first week of January.

Byrd takes over from Louie Gonzalez, who tendered his courtesy resignation after the Green Archers did not make the Final Four in season 81 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament.

Byrd will be around after taking on jobs as a player development coach with Samsung Blue Minx and the Seoul Samsung Thunders in the Korean Basketball League.

Danny Seigle, Chappy Callanta, MC Abolucion and Charles Waters will come aboard as Byrd’s assistants, joining Paulo Sauler, who comes from Gonzalez’s coaching staff.

Also out are assistant coaches Glenn Capacio, Siot Tanquingcen and Anton Altamirano.

Team management decided to get Byrd after they picked from candidates like Tim Lewis, an American coach, Alab head coach Jimmy Alapag and Lyceum head coach Topex Robinson.
