MULTI-MEDALIST and former world jiu-jitsu champion Margarita “Meggie” Ochoa, now a dedicated coach, dreams of seeing not only her students but all female athletes on the national team exceed her accomplishments on the mat.

“My hope and dream is that someday, the women and girls from both the national team and @solasjiujitsu will reach even further than what the Lord graciously allowed in my life, ultimately so that His name may continue to be honored,” Ochoa shared in a heartfelt social media post, which she split into three parts.

Shortly after receiving the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Sports Commission during a glittering ceremony at Century Park Hotel, the devout Christian athlete gave full credit to God.

“I am grateful because it’s not my name that is honored, but the Lord’s. Any recognition I receive is only because of Him — He made me, sustains me, saved me, and whatever I accomplish is a result of His work in me. Any good that comes from me is solely because of Him. Apart from Him, no good can come from me,” she said.

PSC Commissioner Olivia Coo, a Hall of Fame bowler, who leads the commission’s women-in-sports initiatives, said Ochoa’s global achievements in jiu-jitsu deserved recognition, especially following her recent retirement from competition.

“She’s just retired, and it’s truly fitting for her to be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award,” Coo said.

Now shifting her focus entirely to coaching the Philippine national team, Ochoa aims to mentor the next generation of champions.

Coo led the commission in honoring 140 women athletes, coaches, and sports executives for their excellence and inspiration in the world of sports.

Ochoa also took time to thank those who supported her journey as an athlete.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey—especially our coaches throughout my time with the team: Coach Hansel, Coach @alisulit, Coach @stephenkamphuis. Thank you for being in my corner, for your guidance, and unwavering support throughout my career.”

“To my teammates on the national team, thank you for the training, camaraderie, and friendship through the years. I look back on all the battles we fought together with immense gratitude. Love and miss you all so much!”
