PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan– After a six-year break, the BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games returns with a renewed spirit, uniting athletes from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines in a celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The event kicks off on Sunday, December 1, at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex with the opening ceremonies participated by
delegates from all four countries to be joined by local officials, led by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richard Bachmann, in a parade to honor the rich cultural heritage and renew ties.
Festivities began on Saturday (November 30) with the unveiling of the official mascot, Batik, alongside a token presentation and a welcome dinner hosted by the city of Puerto Princesa led by Mayor Lucilo Bayron.
Beyond the competition, the Games aim to strengthen regional cooperation and economic development through sports.
The Philippines, determined to recapture its former glory, seeks its second overall title, with its last victory achieved 21 years ago.
The nation faces fierce competition from its neighbors, including reigning champion Malaysia, as they compete in eight events: archery, athletics, badminton, esports, karate, pencak silat, sepak takraw, and swimming.
This marks the fourth time the Philippines has hosted the Games and the second time they take place in Puerto Princesa City, the first being in 2003.
The Games were inaugurated in General Santos City in 1996, while the 2020 edition in Davao City was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
