Gilas Pilipinas moved one step closer to qualifying for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 after a dominant 93-54 victory over Hong Kong on Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Riding high from their historic upset of New Zealand last Thursday, Gilas took early control of the game. However, it wasn’t until a blistering third quarter that they pulled away for good, extending their unbeaten streak to four and solidifying their lead in Group B.
The Philippines’ qualification could be finalized as early as Monday if New Zealand (2-1) defeats Chinese Taipei (1-2) in Christchurch, ensuring Gilas’ spot in next year’s tournament in Saudi Arabia.
Carl Tamayo led the scoring for Gilas with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, along with five rebounds. The young forward made the most of the extended minutes afforded to him by head coach Tim Cone.
June Mar Fajardo added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Justin Brownlee delivered a well-rounded performance with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Kai Sotto continued his stellar play, posting a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, along with two assists and two blocks. His imposing presence delighted the 11,896 fans who packed the arena to witness the game.
