Olympian turned mentor: Mary Tabal-Jimenez leads Mandaue City’s bid in Batang Pinoy 2024

Cebuana Olympian Mary Joy Tabal-Jimenez, the Philippines’ first Olympic marathoner, is embracing her second year as Mandaue City’s top sports development official. The 35-year-old athlete-turned-leader is focused on propelling the city to an impressive performance in the 2024 Batang Pinoy National Championship.

Tabal-Jimenez’s journey as a sports leader began in 2023 when she faced the daunting task of overseeing Mandaue’s participation in both the Batang Pinoy and the Philippine National Games simultaneously—a challenge she likened to a “baptism of fire.” This year, with only one major event to manage, her efforts are singularly directed toward ensuring Mandaue’s success.

“I’m focusing on my work while also being a full-time mom,” said Tabal-Jimenez during a welcome ceremony for delegates, hosted by Mandaue City Mayor Lucilo Bayron and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Mandaue’s 2024 contingent comprises 123 athletes, 22 coaches, and 12 competitors in athletics. Under Tabal-Jimenez’s leadership last year, the city achieved a commendable tally of four golds, five silvers, and 13 bronzes.

“This year feels less stressful. I’m more relaxed because everything is better organized, and we’re fully prepared,” said Tabal-Jimenez, who still holds the national marathon record of 2:43.31 and is a six-time champion of the prestigious Milo Marathon.

Semi-retired from competitive running, Tabal-Jimenez stepped back from elite competitions during the pandemic. Her last major race was a runner-up finish in the 42nd Milo Marathon in 2020. Despite shifting to recreational running, she remains proud of her accomplishments, including a Southeast Asian Games gold medal and two silvers during her tenure as a national athlete.

Now balancing her professional and personal life, Tabal-Jimenez’s priorities have shifted since her 2021 marriage to Navy Lt. Dan Jimenez, who currently serves aboard the BRP Antonio Luna. She is also a devoted mother to their daughter, Athena, while spearheading Mandaue’s sports initiatives.

The 2024 Batang Pinoy will feature competitions across eight venues in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
