Team Philippines absorbed its first loss in Group G of the World Floorball Championships 2024 AOFC Qualifications, falling at the hands of Southeast Asian rival Thailand, 3-8, on Thursday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Looking ahead, the team aims to secure a spot in the next round by winning against the top-ranked team in Group F, Australia, on Friday.

The Philippines was coming off fresh from an impressive 12-4 victory over South Korea on Wednesday with Kim Franz Varga earning the title of Player of the Game for his pivotal assists that played a crucial role in the victory.

The Philippines set the tone early, finishing the first period with a commanding 4-1 lead against the South Koreans.

John Calleryd Dela Pena scored the opening goal, assisted by Sellgren Ponce, followed swiftly by a second goal from Mattiece Cortez. Simon Sicat Larano added a third goal at the 4-210-minute mark, and Melvin Mendoza further extended the lead with a penalty shot.

South Korea’s Hoon Dong Cho managed to score their first goal just before the 18-minute mark, capitalizing on the Philippines being shorthanded due to fouls.

Team Philippines scored its first victory in the tournament at the expense of New Zealand, 4-2, on Monday.
