Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. said Monday via Instagram that he’d had surgery after he was shot in what the NFL team said was an attempted robbery or carjacking.

“Surgery went well! Thanks for the prayers!” the 23-year-old posted on Monday, a day after the incident outside a Washington restaurant in which the young player was shot in the leg.

Police said two suspects fled the scene, where a firearm was discovered.

“We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, DC,” the Commanders said in a statement on Sunday, adding that Robinson’s injuries were “non-life-threatening.”

Commanders coach Ron Rivera visited Robinson in hospital on Sunday night and said Monday he was doing well.

“We had an opportunity to visit with him last night, which was really a relief and kind of cool because he was in a really good place,” Rivera said.

“The doctors were very positive with him and he was very positive as well. We’re very fortunate. He’s very fortunate and it’s a very unfortunate situation, but he’s doing well.

“It’ll be a matter of time before he is back out here.”

Robinson, a third-round pick in the NFL draft, had been impressive in pre-season not only in his running style but in his approach to the job that had Rivera calling him “a heck of a young man.”
