‘Project Hail Mary’ scores another win at the tills

Space adventure Project Hail Mary topped the North American box office for a second straight week with $54.5 million, industry estimates showed Sunday.

Ryan Gosling stars in the Amazon MGM film as a teacher-turned-astronaut who awakens on a spaceship with a mission to save Earth from a sun-dimming phenomenon. It is adapted from a novel by Andy Weir, author of the 2015 hit The Martian.

Disney/Pixar animated Hoppers held second place with $12.2 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to Exhibitor Relations. The film follows a young animal lover who transfers her consciousness into a robotic beaver to better communicate with and protect wildlife.

Debuting in third place was the horror film They Will Kill You, with $5 million. The Warner Bros movie stars Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), and Patricia Arquette, telling the story of a maid in a New York building where disappearances are common.

Fourth place went to Hindi spy thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge with $4.75 million. Released three months after the original in North America, it follows an Indian spy infiltrating Pakistani crime syndicates and politics to dismantle a terror network. The film is banned in Pakistan.

Rounding out the top five was Universal’s romance Reminders of Him with $4.7 million. Adapted from a Colleen Hoover novel, it stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers. AFP
