Lea Salonga has confirmed that she and husband Robert Chien are no longer together, saying the separation happened some time ago.
The Broadway star briefly addressed the matter during a media interview while promoting Les Misérables: World Tour Spectacular, which opened at The Theatre at Solaire on Jan. 20. Lea currently plays Madame Thénardier in the production.
The topic came up as she spoke about their only child, Nic Chien, a trans actor. Lea shared that Nic continues to receive strong support despite both parents having demanding schedules.
“He [Nic] has so much support… We’re both super busy but, thankfully, the dad and dad’s partner are the ones kind of ‘Pag may sipon ka, it’s here, let’s send you food. Let’s make sure that you’re well,’” she said.
She then confirmed the status of her marriage. “Yes… So, yes, it’s not a secret. I am… yeah, we’ve been separated for a while,” Lea said. “And now he’s happy and I am happy that he’s happy.”
Lea did not go into detail about the reason for the separation or when it happened.
Lea and Robert, both 54, were married on Jan. 10, 2007, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.
