The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) has partnered with The Japan Foundation, Manila and BRDG, a theater group from Kyoto, Japan, to stage the interactive show Sari-Sali Portal Cafe.
Featuring Filipino and Japanese theater actors Hitomi Nagasu, Zoe Damag, Julio Garcia, and Hiroyuki Kozaka, the play takes inspiration from Hokkori Cafe, a real community cafe in Kyoto that welcomes people from all walks of life.
Directed by Ian Segarra and Keiko Yamaguchi, the play tells the story of introverted artist Ayaka, music teacher Mayumi, former activist Kaloy, and part-time worker Yoshi, who share drinks and food while revealing their personal stories.
To immerse the audience in the communal setting, the production design, led by Ralph Lumbres, transforms the stage into the appearance of a community cafe.
Sari-Sali Portal Cafe will be staged at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City on Dec. 6 at 8:00 pm, and on Dec. 7 and 8 at 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
