Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr. finally claimed his spot on Oscar night as he nabbed his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Nolan’s historical drama “Oppenheimer”.

Robert gave life to the character of Lewis Strauss, a historical antagonist of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, potrayed by Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy, during the development of the atomic bomb.

Since its release, the film had received critical acclaim, especially for Robert’s portrayal as a villain.

His win marked a turning point for the “Oppenheimer” star’s career, finally snatching his Oscar win after being nominated for three times.

While known for playing iconic and charismatic characters like “Iron Man” and “Sherlock Holmes”, Robert as the ruthless bureaucrat cemented his status as a versatile actor, capable of captivating audiences in both hero and villain roles.

During his acceptance speech, the award-winning actor expressed his gratitude towards his “terrible childhood” and “veterianarian”.

“I’d like to thank my terrible childood and the Academy—in that order. I’d like to thank my veterinarian—I meant wife—Susan Downey over there. She found me, a snarling rescue pet, and loved me back to life. That’s why I am here. Thank you,” said Robert.

He then thanked the film’s director, producer, and writer Christopher Nolan, the team behind it, and his co-stars.

“Here’s my little secret, I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it, Emma made sure that she wrapped—surrounded me with one of the greatest cast and crews of all time. Emily, Cillian, Matt Damon, it was fantastic and I stand here before you a better man because of it. You know, what we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important,” he continued.

Robert entered the Oscars as a frontrunner, having already secured Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for his supporting role.

“Oppenheimer” itself is a strong contender at this year’s Academy Awards, receiving nominations across several major categories.
