In GMA Network’s latest series, Makiling, Derrick Monasterio and Elle Villanueva take a different approach by toning down the sexiness to focus on a gripping tale of revenge. The series is set to captivate audiences with its distinct narrative, offering a unique flavor for viewers.

Derrick, who was previously paired with Elle in the sexy romantic series Return to Paradise, emphasizes that their new project diverges from the intensity of its predecessor, concentrating more on romance.

The plot centers around the life of Amira, a girl who was bullied in the past and is now seeking retribution. Although the series may not be as overtly sexy, Derrick expresses gratitude for the added depth and uniqueness brought by the director.

‘Makiling’ intertwines revenge drama, storytelling power, and fantasy in a captivating afternoon series

“It’s not as intense compared to Return to Paradise which focuses more on romance. On the other hand, Makiling focuses on the life of a girl who was bullied in the past and is now seeking revenge. Although it may not be as sexy, we have added a unique flavor for the viewers,” the 28-year-old singer and actor says.

Elle shares her perspective, stating that Makiling’s intensity is of a unique nature. Unlike their previous series that leaned more towards emphasizing sensuality, the prevailing intensity revolves around the theme of seeking extreme revenge.

“It’s a different kind of intensity. The previous series had more emphasis on being sexy. The characters’ emotions here are heightened, and every time you watch it, we make sure that your eyes will be glued to the TV,” Elle elaborates.

The stellar cast of the new afternoon soap, ‘Makiling’

Makiling tells the compelling story of Amira, a provincial girl facing adversities in Manila. Targeted by a group of rich, powerful, and sadistic bullies, Amira transforms herself, seeking justice and revenge for the suffering she endured.

Her journey unfolds against the backdrop of her family’s herbal healing traditions at the foot of Mt. Makiling. Desperate to aid her family’s finances, Amira faces terror from the infamous school bullies. The plot thickens as Amira discovers a mysterious flower, the Mutya, in the forests of Makiling, leading to conflicts with her tormentors.

Elle expresses gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a powerful project, emphasizing the challenging and mature nature of her role.

“I am grateful to GMA Network for giving me a project, and it’s not just any project—it has a beautiful story. Especially since it’s a revenge drama. When I first heard the title Makiling, it immediately piqued my interest. I want to do justice to the character of Amira. It’s challenging for me,” says Elle.

Derrick, playing Amira’s childhood sweetheart, Alex, sees his character as a protector with many layers, showcasing his growth and maturity.

“It’s very different from my previous character. The approach has been different since I’ve matured. My perspective on the world has changed, so my character as Alex, a protector with many layers to his personality, can be given more depth,” he states.

The cast includes Thea Tolentino, Kristoffer Martin, Myrtle Sarrosa, Royce Cabrera, Teejay Marquez, and Claire Castro, collectively known as the “Crazy 5.”

The series also features esteemed character actors Mon Confiado, Bernadette Allyson-Estrada, Richard Quan, Cris Villanueva, Lui Manansala, Andrea Del Rosario, and Lotlot de Leon.

Produced by the award-winning GMA Public Affairs team, responsible for hits like Lolong, The Write One, and Owe My Love, Makiling promises a gripping narrative from the original concept of Aeious Asin and the late Reign Loleng. Written by Carlos Palanca Memorial Awardee Clar Estuar-Navarro, the series is directed by Conrado Peru.

Makiling premieres today at 4:00 pm on GMA Afternoon Prime.
