I got this from my mailbox sent by someone apparently working for the government agency sponsoring this interesting project.

Project for urging critical and analytical thinking
Key people join Dr. Josette Biyo (seated right) during the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement

The search is on for science and technology projects that will benefit Filipino communities in the 3rd imake.wemake: create.innovate.collaborate competition for senior high school students.

This year, the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute partners with C&E Publishing, Inc., publisher and distributor of educational materials, to mount the contest that seeks to unleash the creativity of students in innovation using accessible technologies.

In the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the two parties held in July 17 at the World Trade Center during the National Science and Technology Week, DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo thanked C&E for its support in promoting innovation among the youth.

Dr. Biyo shared that the project aims to improve the students’ engineering and technical proficiencies, as well as develop their communication, critical and analytical thinking skills.

The competition comes in three stages: (1) Call for Proposals and Selection; (2) Technical Training/Workshop and Project Pitching; and (3) Final Project Presentation and Judging. Students will get the opportunity to pitch, build, and present their S&T projects that cater to important societal and community issues using the Arduino CTC 101 kit.

To join, a team composed of three Grade 11 and/or Grade 12 students and one teacher per school may submit a project proposal addressing any of the following areas: food safety, security, traffic/road congestion, health, education, disaster mitigation, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and environment. A two to three-minute video supporting the concept should accompany the proposal.

School teams that will make it past the selection process will be invited to attend a five-day technical training/workshop on basic electronics, programming, troubleshooting, and presentation skills. Each team will also get free kit-of-parts.

Teams will be given a period of three months prior to the final project presentation and judging. The projects will be evaluated by the board of judges based on relevance and potential impact to the community of interest, novelty, viability, and community engagement.

The Youth Innovation Prize and 100,000 pesos each as cash prize will be given to three school teams.

Last year, senior high school teams from the Technological Institute of the Philippines-Quezon City, Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas, and New Era University won the Youth Innovation Prize for their viability and potential to address important societal and community issues while College of St. John-Roxas clinched the special Internet of Things award from Acer.

Deadline for submission of proposals is on August 10.

I like projects similar to this that encourage students to think critically and become more analytic in their study of processes. This will redoubtably guarantee the intellectual integrity of future professionals that can be of service to the advancement of this country.

Marjorie not happy about Julia-Gerard rumors

If I were Marjorie Barretto I’d probably be as mad as hell with netizens maliciously implying something more than friendship is going on between her daughter Julia and actor Gerald Anderson, her co-star in the movie Between Maybes.

The rumors have even gotten worse with Bea Alonzo posting cryptic messages implying her relationship with the actor may now be over.

Meanwhile, we don’t hear or read anything from Gerald or from his drumbeaters.

I remember what Gerald told me when I asked him about the possibility of falling for Julia (this was during the press con for the film when about that time gossip about the two had started circulating among netizens, and then Joshua Garcia and Julia announced they had gone back to where they started, meaning they had returned their status to just friends). He said, “Yes, she’s attractive, but she’s way too young for me. No, I treat her like a younger sister.” And Julia similarly expressed that kind of feeling for Gerald. “She’s my ‘tito’ and no, I can’t see myself falling for him.”

Yet, rumors persist. But someone in the know whispered to me something that belies that rumor between Gerald and Julia. No, I can’t print it because I promised my source I wouldn’t. But as in all things that pass truth will out and it will set both Julia and Gerald free.

Meanwhile, Marjorie is trying her best to swat off the air the negative vibes these rumors are enveloping her family and Julia’s career.

Julia is shooting for Mikhail Red’s Block Z with former beau Joshua.
