Singer and actress Sunshine Cruz has voiced her support for legislation aimed at protecting the welfare and rights of non-traditional Filipino families. As a single mother who raised her children on her own, Cruz understands the challenges faced by families in unique situations and emphasizes the importance of support systems that can offer legal and social assistance.

“I personally feel for the increasing number of broken families who are constantly struggling for survival, and who are not aware of their legal rights and privileges,” Cruz said.
Non-traditional families, which include live-in parents, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), victims of domestic violence, adoptive and blended families, LGBTQ families, the elderly, and solo parents, often face difficulties in accessing the rights and benefits afforded to more traditional family structures. The acronym ‘LOVABLES’ has been coined to represent these groups for easier recall.
Cruz has found alignment with the advocacy of the Pamilya Ko partylist, which works to address these issues.
The group proposes legislation for equal rights for children born in and out of wedlock, as well as a domestic partnership law granting live-in partners inheritance rights and the ability to make medical decisions in emergencies. Their efforts also focus on providing livelihood, medical, and legal assistance.
“I have the utmost respect for the group, specifically Pamilya Ko first nominee Attorney Anel Diaz, who topped the 2003 bar exams. His advocacy, inspired by his own struggles as a young orphan, reflects a commitment to long-term, empowering service,” Cruz added.
