Comedy series Son of a Critch, based on the memoir of Canadian comedian Mark Critch, is now streaming on Lionsgate Play.

The semi-autobiographical show follows a young Mark (played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as he navigates junior high in Newfoundland during the 1980s. Critch narrates the series and also plays his father, offering a mix of nostalgia and humor in a story about family, friendship, and self-discovery.

The show, co-created by Critch and Tim McAuliffe, explores themes of acceptance and resilience, balancing lighthearted comedy with issues such as bullying and social struggles. The cast includes Claire Rankin as Mark’s mother, Colton Gobbo as his older brother, and Malcolm McDowell as his grandfather.

Adapted from Critch’s award-winning book, Son of a Critch has drawn praise for its sharp writing and heartfelt storytelling.

Critch told The Mary Sue that portraying his father on screen gave him a unique perspective on his past. “It’s fascinating to relive my own life from a new perspective,” he said.

Son of a Critch previously aired in Canada and has been recognized for its humor and authenticity in depicting childhood challenges.

Lionsgate Play is accessible to consumers in the Philippines. For a monthly subscription cost of P79, the titles can be streamed with a PLDT Home account.
