Royal reunion: Concert King and Queen together again

On Original Pinoy Music (OPM), the reunion of  Pops Fernandez  and  Martin Nievera  is one of the most eagerly awaited events. Despite no longer being in a romantic relationship, their strong on-stage chemistry and musical collaboration still fascinate and excite their fans.

Despite the excitement surrounding their performances, Pops and Martin want to make it clear that they have set boundaries. They don’t want to lead their fans to believe that they will get back together romantically.

“We call it Team Hopia,” Pops said with a smile, a sentiment Martin agreed with.

While many fans hope for a romantic rekindling, the two are adamant that they’re not pretending to be something they’re not.

“What they see is what they get,” Pops shared, emphasizing their commitment to honesty with their audience. Martin added, “Let’s not fool them just for the sake of money.”

Their upcoming concert,  Always & Forever  (a tribute to their 1986 movie of the same title, directed by Danny Zialcita), will be their first performance together at the SM MOA Arena. This will provide a fresh experience for fans, as Pops explained that the concert will feature new arrangements and songs, unlike past shows that often combined elements from their previous performances.

“I’ve been locking myself in my room, really trying to concentrate,” Pops said.

The 58-year-old entertainer is excited about the opportunity to present something new to their audience, with a focus on fresh takes of familiar songs. Martin, too, has been rehearsing, knowing that the harmony on stage will rely heavily on Pops’ expertise.

“With Pops and me on stage, they’ll also expect songs from our era, the ‘80s,” Martin noted.

Both Martin and Pops are proud of the music they made in the ‘80s, with Martin confessing his deep fondness for the decade.

“Music for me was the best from the ‘80s. Even the playlist I listen to in the car is all ‘80s,” he said.

Their upcoming concert will not only be a celebration of their past but also a reflection of how far they’ve come since their last joint performance in 2020.

While their musical partnership remains strong, personal changes have also shaped their lives. The two are now grandparents to  Finn, the son of their eldest son,  Robin Nievera. The arrival of their first grandchild has brought them even closer as a family. Pops, in particular, has found joy in watching her grandchildren grow.

“He’s such a happy baby,” she said with evident pride.

Meanwhile, as Martin approaches his 63rd birthday in February, Pops expresses her heartfelt prayers for his happiness and peace.

“My prayer for Martin is, whatever it is, may he find his peace and happiness always,” she said.
