Catherine Muguerza, a 56-year-old mother from Barangay Sangandaan, has joined the Miss Universe Philippines Quezon City (MUPH-QC) pageant, becoming the second older contestant in the local competition following Jocelyn Cubales’ participation in 2024.
Muguerza, the oldest candidate this year, said she aims to inspire older women to pursue their dreams.
“I want to inspire seasoned women like me. At 56, turning 57 this year, I’m close to becoming a senior citizen. I will just enjoy the moment and be happy. Not everyone gets this opportunity,” she said.
The Miss Universe Organization in 2022 lifted its age restrictions, previously limiting contestants to ages 18 to 28. The updated rules now allow transgender women, divorced women, wives, and mothers to join, promoting inclusivity.
Muguerza, a single mother with four children, said competing locally presents tougher challenges than international pageants.
“I have already won international titles, but competing locally is different, everyone is fierce and the competition is stiff,”Muguerza said.
She won the Mrs. Universe Southeast Asia Worldwide title in August 2024 and the Mrs. Legend Universal-Intercontinental crown in Kuala Lumpur in December.
Muguerza is competing alongside nine other candidates, including Carmel Anne Aquino of Project 6, Patricia Logdat of Barangay South Triangle, Stella Zacarias of Loyola Heights, Filipino-Australian Zoe Honeyman of Barangay Tatalon, Hanna Amistad of Socorro, Jam Co of Barangay Baesa, Andrea Alonzo of E. Rodriguez Sr., Shaina Brillo of Pasong Putik Proper, and Melody Docog of West Kamias.
The Grand Coronation Night is set for Feb. 2 at SM Skydome, North Edsa. Special guests include Manhunt International 2022 winner Kevin Dasom, former Miss Universe Philippines Quezon City Michele Gumabao, and Miss Universe Asia Chelsea Manalo.
