Young actress Sofia Pablo leads her first title role in the GMA Afternoon Prime series Prinsesa ng City Jail, a project she describes as something that pushes her limits as an actor.
Known for lighter roles in the past, Sofia now faces the challenge of portraying Princess, a young girl raised near a prison by her adoptive father (Keempee De Leon), a jail guard.
“Honored, grateful, but more excited,” Sofia said, describing her emotions as the show’s premiere approaches.
Despite initial nerves, she expressed gratitude to her mother network for the opportunity to “kind of level up and showcase my talent in acting.”
Sofia admitted that while she feels distant from her character, she relates to Princess’ deep bond with her father, Dado.
“It’s the same with me and my mom—I’d do anything for her,” Sofia shared. She also connects with Princess’s belief in kindness and her hope that every problem has a solution.
Co-star Allen Ansay also confronts new challenges in the series. He portrays Xavier, a troubled teenager who would later become Princess’s love interest.
According to Allen, preparing for the role required physical and emotional adjustments.
“Since I’m playing a swimmer, I had to stay fit and change how I move. Our director guided me to approach this role differently,” the young actor explained.
Allen, who previously took on lighter roles, welcomed the shift to a more serious character. “It’s unbelievable. Before, our roles were more on the cute side. Here, I was able to show that I’ve leveled up.”
The chemistry between Sofia and Allen extends beyond the screen, sparking curiosity about their dynamic. When asked if Sofia was the “princess of his heart,” Allen responded, “I don’t think that even needs to be asked. Of course, 100 percent, it’s only her.”
Prinsesa ng City Jail features a star-studded cast, including Beauty Gonzalez, Denise Laurel, and Dominic Ochoa. Supporting roles are filled by Ayen Munji-Laurel, Jean Saburit, Jett Pangan, Ina Feleo, Betong Sumaya, Maey Bautista, and Minnie Aguilar.
The series explores Princess’ journey as she brings light to those around her despite longing for the mother who left her. Her life changes upon meeting Xavier, whose own family struggles mirror hers. Their evolving friendship leads them toward healing and self-discovery.
Directed by Jerry Lopez Sineneng, Prinsesa ng City Jail premieres on Jan. 13 and will air weekdays at 3:20 p.m. on GMA Afternoon Prime. Overseas viewers can catch the show via GMA Pinoy TV.
