The Philpop Himig Handog songwriting festival, the biggest collaboration in music, has unveiled the Top 12 songs that capture the spirit of today’s OPM and reflect the struggles, emotions, and aspirations of the current generation.
Leading the list is “ATM” by Francis Contemplacion, a tribute to his wife inspired by Gary Chapman’s “Five Love Languages,” performed by Ice Seguerra. Keith John Quito’s “Buhi” explores the dual meanings of ‘letting go’ and ‘being alive’ in Bisaya, with indie-folk artist Ferdinand Aragon as the interpreter.
Relden Campanilla’s “Dili Na Lang” expresses that love, while beautiful, can be challenging, and features Cebuana artist Jolianne.
Kevin Yadao’s “Ghostwriter” delves into the experience of being ghosted, brought to life by “Idol Philippines” season 2 winner Khimo. Alvin Serito’s “Kurba” celebrates the enchantment of love despite life’s harshness, with this year’s breakthrough OPM artist Maki performing.
Geca Morales’ “Langit Lupa,” inspired by the traditional running-around game of the same name, is performed by Geca herself, along with “Tawag ng Tanghalan” season 6 champion Lyka Estrella and Idol Philippines season 2 contestant Annrain. Rob Angeles’ “MHWG,” short for “mahiwaga,” offers a hopeful message encouraging listeners to embrace life’s unexpected opportunities, interpreted by P-pop group VXON.
Rinz Ruiz’s “Papahiram” speaks to genuine love that accepts both the good and the bad, with OPM hitmaker Moira and indie musician Johnnoy Danao performing. “Salamat (Nga Wala Na Ta)” by Jimmy Ricks focuses on personal growth and gratitude, with Kurt Fick interpreting the song.
Maric Gavino’s “Taliwala” tells a story of commitment despite fading love, with Noah Alejandre from the duo reon providing the vocals. Shantel Cyline Lapatha’s “Tulala” is an energetic track about a girl’s instant attraction to a stranger, performed with jazz, funk, and soul band Extrapolation. Finally, Tiara Shaye’s “Wag Paglaruan” explores the fear of emotional manipulation, with vibrant vocals from FANA and Tiara herself.
Philpop Himig Handog, an initiative of the Philpop Musicfest Foundation and Himig Handog, began as a mentorship program featuring workshops and songwriting sessions for emerging Filipino composers nationwide. The Top 12 entries will compete for top honors, with prizes of P1,000,000 for 1st place, P500,000 for 2nd place, and P200,000 for 3rd place.
