Obiena checks into Athlete’s Village amid back concerns

PARIS (Via PLDT Home) – Philippine pole vaulting pride Ernest John “EJ” Obiena has formally settled into the Athlete’s Village as he gears up for the qualifying round of the Paris Olympics.

However, lingering back issues have cast a shadow over the world No. 2’s preparations.

Obiena’s confidante, Jim Lafferty, disclosed that the Filipino athlete has been grappling with back pain since 2022.

Despite the persistent discomfort, Lafferty expressed optimism about Obiena’s current condition, attributing his progress to diligent recovery efforts.

This was confirmed by Obiena’s long-time physiotherapist Antonio Guglietta, who assured that Obiena is currently injury-free.

While Obiena has explored the Athletes Village, the decision on whether to stay there or opt for a hotel accommodation remains pending. Nevertheless, Lafferty emphasized the Filipino Olympian’s positive outlook and readiness for the upcoming competition.

The pole vault qualifiers are scheduled for Saturday at the Stade de France, with the final showdown set for Tuesday.

Obiena has arrived in Paris accompanied by his trusted team, including renowned Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.

The Filipino pole vaulter is among 31 athletes vying for a spot in the final. The competition is expected to be fierce, with the likes of Olympic and world champion Armand Duplantis of Sweden, world No. 3 Chris Nielsen, and American standout Sam Kendricks headlining the field.

To secure a podium finish or challenge Duplantis’ dominance, analysts believe Obiena must clear the 6.0-meter mark, a height he has already conquered on two occasions.
