Lakas-HNP alliance ready to ‘level up‘

The Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) and the Lakas-Christian Muslims Democrats will form a formidable alliance to ensure victory in next year’s national elections.

House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez made the announcement amid talks of a possible political tandem with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio for the 2022 polls.

“We have a close relationship and we are looking forward to strengthening it further as we look toward the 2022 elections. We will not part ways, so to speak,” he said in a press briefing.

“In fact, we will strengthen our alliance and we will formalize that very soon, at a proper time and what is most mutually convenient to both parties,” he added.

He said HNP, Duterte-Carpio’s political party, and Lakas have a long-standing alliance even before the 2019 elections.

But Romualdez clarified that it is premature to speculate on the possible tandem as both he and Duterte-Carpio have yet to firm up their political plans for the 2022 polls.

“First of all, we do not want to preempt Mayor Sara because she has to make her final decision on the matter but definitely Mayor Inday Sara, her brand of leadership, she is really qualified,” Romualdez said.

“I have not even decided myself on a national run but definitely it is something that we will be considering and making consultations with our partymates and our constituency,” he added.
