Flood waters rendered several roads and streets across Metro Manila and nearby Luzon provinces impassable on Wednesday morning, July 24, as the southwest monsoon continues to bring heavy rains enhanced by Typhoon ‘Carina.’
Local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) announced that some of the roads and villages in their respective jurisdictions were not accessible to vehicles due to flood waters that reached from gutter to chest-deep levels.
Metro Manila cities with reported flood situations include the following:
· Parañaque City – 14 barangays affected across two districts: District 1 – Baclaran, San Dionisio, San Isidro, La Huerta, Santo Niño, Tambo, Vitalez; District 2 – Don Bosco, Marcelo Green, Merville, Moonwalk, San Antonio, San Martin de Porres, Sun Valley
· Taguig City – two districts affected: District 1 – Calzada, Lower Bicutan, Hagonoy, Ibayo-Tipas, New Lower Bicutan, Santa Ana, Palingon, Tuktukan, Ususan, Wawa; District 2 – Fort Bonifacio, Katuparan
· Pasig City – Canley Road corner C5 in Bagong Ilog (southbound), SM Hypermarket C5 Road in Ugong, C. De La Paz Street in Caniogan, G. Raymundo in Malinao
· Pateros – three blocks (1, 2 and 3) across E. Hermosa Street in San Roque
· Manila – Finance Road, Nakpil, Pedro Gil, Kalaw and Padre Faura Streets along Taft Avenue; UN Avenue, Ayala and España boulevards
· Navotas City – Sipac, Daanghari, San Roque, San Jose, Tanza 1 and 2
· Valenzuela City – some areas passable to all types of vehicles along MacArthur Highway; those rendered impassable to light vehicles are: parts of Marulas, Malinta, Dalandanan; Maysan to Bagbaguin Road is passable
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also released flood advisories across the NCR due to continuous rains from Tuesday night until early Wednesday morning.
As of 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, the MMDA monitored above chest flood (45 inches) in Quezon City, particularly along the southbound lane of Araneta Avenue, Ma. Clara Street, and E. Rodriguez Avenue; waist-deep at the corner of EDSA and Oliveros; knee-deep flood in Balintawak, and Biak na Bato.
In Manila, knee-deep floods also caused slow vehicle movement at various major intersections, including Vito Cruz Street and Taft Avenue, Pedro Gil Street and Quirino Avenue, Jose Abad Santos Avenue and Quiricada Street, and the streets of Dela Fuente and Antipolo; gutter deep along Bonifacio Drive; Dimasalang corner Becerra Street, Lacson Street, and Espana Boulevard; and Kalaw Street and Roxas Boulevard.
Gutter deep was also reported along Marcos Highway in Marikina City; Andrews Avenue, Roxas Boulevard, Taft Avenue and Airport Road in Pasay City; half-tire deep along MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela City; and above knee along C-5 Road near Palar in Taguig City, and Orense-Guadalupe in Makati City.
In Las Pinas City, heavy rainfall caused floods along Tiongkiao Avenue going to Evacom while Sucat Road in Paranaque City was reported not passable to light vehicles.
LGUs in Metro Manilla have decided to suspend classes in both public and private schools in all levels on Wednesday due to the bad weather conditions.
