A new museum has opened in Sweden featuring the most disgusting food from around the world, including the country’s own balut (fertilized duck egg).
“Disgust is completely subjective,” said Samuel West, curator of Malmo’s Disgusting Food Museum, in an interview with BBC.
“Seeing your own food on display right next to some rotting fish that someone else thinks is a delicacy will challenge your own ideas of what is disgusting,” West added.
The 400-square-meter olfactory experience aims to prove that what is yucky for one person is yummy for another.
There are 80 exhibits on display, including balut, bull’s penis from China, a cheese from Sardinia containing live maggots, fried Tarantulas from Cambodia, durian from Thailand, and Surströmming–a fermented herring, among others.
“What we find disgusting has to be learned. It’s purely cultural,” West said.
