PH envoy recalled over maltreatment

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Monday ordered the recall of Philippine Ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro.

“The Philippine Ambassador to Brazil has been recalled effective immediately to explain the maltreatment of her service staff,” Locsin said in a Twitter post.

He made the statement after a viral video showed Mauro berating and mistreating her household help.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs said the household help left Brasilia on Oct. 21 and was back in the Philippines.

“The DFA is reaching out to her to ensure her well-being and cooperation in the investigation,” the agency said.

Foreign Affairs also assured the public that a thorough investigation of the issue would be conducted.
