The conveyance of passengers at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 stations will now be easier as all escalators and elevators of the rail service are now operational.

In a statement on Friday, the MRT-3 said its maintenance and rehabilitation provider Sumitomo-MHI-TESP (Sumitomo) completed the rehabilitation works for all 46 escalators and 34 elevators in its 13 stations.

“To keep these station facilities in good working condition, and thus avoid frequent breakdowns, the DOTr (Department of Transportation) also arranged for their regular preventive maintenance,” the MRT-3 said in a statement.

The completion of the rehabilitation project, it said, was finished ahead of its target completion date set in September.

“The project commenced in June last year,” it added.

It noted that on Jan. 2, 2019, there were only 14 escalators working in the MRT-3, while only five elevators were operations since May 4, 2016.

MRT-3 Director for Operations Michael Capati said the repair of both escalators and elevators, was only part of the MRT-3’s responsibility to restore the MRT-3 to its “original, high-grade state.”

“The repair of all the escalators and elevators is a big help for our commuters. This is our responsibility to the passengers,” Capati said.

In late July, the MRT-3 announced it has rescheduled its planned suspension of operations on weekends of August and September to October and November of this year to allow for rail replacement works.

This, among others, is part of the DOTr’s comprehensive rehabilitation of the MRT-3.
