Release P1,000 pension increase

A lawmaker on Thursday renewed his appeal to President Duterte to order the immediate release of the much-delayed P1,000 increase in the monthly pension of retired members of the Social Security System.

“Until the present, the second tranche has yet to be approved and released. The additional P1,000 will be a big help to our pensioners, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic. Pensioners are appealing for its release, saying they would use it to buy medicines,” Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez earlier filed Resolution No. 957 where he noted that the 17th Congress had approved a P2,000 adjustment in SSS pension.

He said Congress had mandated that the first tranche of P1,000 was to be paid “starting January 2017,” with the second half to be given “in January 2019.”

Rodriguez lamented that many senior citizens did not receive financial aid under the government’s P200-billion social amelioration program, which explicitly excluded retirees of both the SSS and the Government Service Insurance System who are receiving pension.

“They have to be helped, especially SSS pensioners, many of whom get less than P5,000 a month. They need the P1,000 increase,” he said.
